Bunch Berries: Grows
in the shade of heath, azaleas, etc. Short, compact plant with white flowers and green leaves give way to red berries and
bright crimson foliage in the fall. Location: Roaring Plains, eastern portion of the South Prong Trail, MNF, WV.
Blue Berries: White
to very pale blue blossoms. Grow in dense thickets in woods or open fields. Fruit ripens in July at lower elevations. Location:
Massanutten Mt., GWNF, VA.
Bloodroot: An early
riser in spring. Grows out from under dead leaves on the Forest floor. Hundreds of these were observed at the intersection
of Hull School Trail and Fork Trail in SNP, VA.
Bottle Gentian: Odd
petunia like flower that never quite gets there. Plant is a creeper. Blooms in summer. Location: Tea Creek Drainage, MNF,
WV.
Star of Bethlehem: An escaped domestic from the Lily family. Location: Along Raven Rock Falls off of Gunpowder
River in April.
Cotton Grass: This variety is Eriophorum virginicum. Grows in peat bogs of WV. Blooms in late summer/early fall.
These were found in a couple of places on Canaan Mt, MNF, WV.
Starry Campion: 24-30 inch erect plant. Flower has 4 highly fringed petals, giving the appearance of many petals.

White Campion or Evening Lychnis (Lychnis alba): A European introduction having male and female
flowers. Blooms all summer along edges, roads, fields and waste places. Location: AT, Reed's Gap, Blue Ridge Parkway, VA.
Service Berry: AKA Shad Bush. Grows to 20 feet. First tree to bloom in spring. Bears bright red berries in fall.

Flowering Spurge (Euphorbia corollata): Found in dry open
woods and fields. Stems contain a milky juice which has been used as a laxative. An overdose can be poisonous! Location:

to September in marshes. Can grow to 7 feet tall. Location: Jug Bay, Patuxent River, MD. Photo by Ken Clark.
One-Flower Cancer Root (Orobanche uniflora). A parasitic plant. Blooms April through June. Likes damp
areas. Location: Jeremy's Run Tr, SNP, VA.
Nightshade (Solanum nigrum): Grows in waste areas. Produces black
berries. Location: Kaymoor Top, New River Gorge NR, WV.

Early Saxifrage: Small clusters of fragrant white flowers on naked stalks from the center of oval basal leaves. Blooms
April to June. As you can see they like rocks. Location: Shenk's Ferry Wild Flower Preserve, Holtwood Recreation Area, PA.
Lettuceleaf Saxifrage (Saxifraga
micranthidifolia): Can grow up to 30 inches. Large, dandelion-like toothed basal leaves. Minute white flowers atop nearly
naked stems. Blooms in spring. Prefers streams,
seeps and other moist areas. Location: Cornelius Creek Tr, Jefferson National Forest, VA.
Painted Trillium (Trillium undulatum): Grows in moist forests and swamps. Blooms in May - June. Don't confuse
this one with the white variant of the Red Tillium below. Location: Mountainside Tr, Canaan Mt, MNF, WV.
White Variant of Red Trillium (Trillium erectum): The first Trillium to bloom (April 0 May). Do not confuse with

Large Flowered or White Trillium (Trillium grandiflorum): Prefers Shade. Blooms April-May. Location: Shenk's Ferry
Wild Flower Preserve, Holtwood Recreation Area, PA.
Hawthorn Tree: Domestic tree that grows wild on mountain tops. Beware of the sharp 2 inch long thorns. Location: Hidden
Passage, Roaring Plains, MNF, WV.
Round Leaf Hepatica/ White variant: Comes in blue, pink and violet. Early bloomer (March April) along streams and
creeks. Location: Piney Run Trail, SNP, VA.
Chokeberry Bush: One of 3 varieties growing in huge colonies
in the Dolly Sods Bogs, MNF, WV.
Winter Green: AKA Tea Berry. Creamy white nodding flowers
with dark green, heavily veined basal leaves. Foilage is evergreen.Produces spicy red berries. Supposed to bloom in April
and May but this and other specimens were found at their peak in Mid-June all along ridge trails in the Overall Run area of
SNP, VA.
Common Chickweed (Stelleria media): Grows everywhere in the spring. Location: On the AT in SNP.
Starflower (Trientalis borealis): Only 2 inches tall but its pointed petals are very showy. Found in Moist forests.
Spring bloomer. Location: AFT, PA.
Common Strawberry (Fragraria virginiana): A creeper. Blooms in spring. Produces small red fruit. Location:
Knob Mt Tr, SNP, VA.
Tall Deer Berry (Vaccinium stamineum): A blueberry-like heath with wide open white flowers/w yellow
stamens and pistils. Grows to about 6 feet. Blooms in May. Bears green to yellow fruit. Location: AT, James River Face,
Gleenwood RD, JNF, VA.

Cut-leaved Toothwort (Denteria lanciniata): White or pink flowers. Bloom April-May. Prefer wet areas.

American Honeysuckle: Unlike Japanese Honeysuckle, this
is not a vine but rather a bush. This one is at the Long Pond Trailhead on Fifteen Mile Creek Rd, GRSF, MD.

Wood Anemone: Early spring flower. Flowers similar to its cousin, Rue Anemone but the leaves are lancelet shaped while
Rue's are rounder and irregular. Grows in open woods, around rocks and as a border. Location: Great North
Mt. Trail, near its junction with Laurel Run Trail.
High Bush Blackberries along Red Creek, Dolly Sods, MNF
White Dog Violet: Found in shady areas. Common.
Canada Violet (Viola canadensis): Perhaps the tallest violet at a maximum height of 16 inches. Location:
Jeremy's Run Tr, SNP, VA.
Moss Phlox (Phlox subulata): Very similar

Mayapple (Podophyllum peltatum): One large, nodding white
flower usually hiding under two multi-lobed thick leaves. Gives rise to crab apple size fruit which is a favorite of deer.

Wild Rice (Zizania aquatica): Grows in wetlands. Can reach
a hieght of 9 feet. Simple white flowers on upper, erect branches are female. Flowers on drooping, lower branches are

Partridege (Deer) Berry, Mitchella
repens: Tiny simple, 4-petaled, white flowers above a mat of dark green round leaves. Grows in shady, moist areas. Yields
bright red berries. Location: Otter Creek Tr, MNF, WV.
Dewberry (Rubus hispidus): Forms mats in damp areas. Produces
small blackberry-type fruit. Location: Moore Run Tr, Otter Creek Wilderness, MNF, WV.
